Guide Boats and Pack Canoes

Postby Hobie on Mon Oct 01, 2007 2:13 pm

I've got some photos of Lake George from the 1970s back to maybe the 1890s somewhere around here.  The family made a photo album of the place for the new owners so I don't have access to all the old photos.

Route 9 ended right above the cabin until the 1930s (I think).  I know that in 1926 Great-Grandma killed a rattlesnake in the middle of what is route 9 today.

Those lakes are beautiful, I wish I'd seen them before all the building along the shores.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Well, I've not gotten the scanner up yet but have located some Lake George photos.  I asked for more but haven't received them from those family members who have them.

Just to update you guys, last summer I took the old wood and canvas Old Town Otca to the lake. It was great with the family and I soloed it fine after adding a couple water bags for ballast in the front of the boat. These days, I am thinking about a royalex canoe, maybe a Mohawk at a good price. The Otca is just too heavy for cartopping, maybe 80 lbs.!

The old Savage 99 is in for some stock work at the gunsmith. After mounting a vintage Weaver scope with Stith mounts, I discovered a previous owner had savaged the stock just behind the tang. A good sized chunk of wood was cut out when they added a Marble peep sight. Then I had some problem with the forestock and had to have the screw mount adjusted. I will get it back later this week.

The third thing is I may not be going back to my usual lodge this summer. They keep jacking up the price and now it is up to $800 a week. A few years ago it was only $650 and it seemed like a good deal. But with a 10 hour drive with the little ones, it is a bit of a hassle. I would prefer to just go camping and cut the expenses. Anyone got any recommendations there? We have been going to a small lake in Warren county.

Sounds like you had a great time with the Otca and family 8)

Sounds like that Savage found a good loving home :)

Sucks to hear about the cost increases :( Hope you get some good leads on camping spots here .

PS . Don't be bashfull , we don't bite
Stop by more often , start some threads for your 99 , your search for your next water skipper , your kids and camping , searching for camping spots , ect ect just to give you some ideas :D

Don't know what you're looking for as far as the camping goes. Full ammenities campsite or more primitive? Minerva lake campground has a nice beach and good fishing. Plenty to do in the surrounding area. State land primitive camping on Northwoods club rd. on the Boreas river, with Huntley pond for paddling and fishing. Hike to the blue ledges on the Hudson. :)
