Gotta agree with you on that one.  Cartridge reloading looks like you need to use your brain abit more than shotshells.  I used to sit for hours and mindlessly reload for skeet shooting.

Reloading Calibers

Postby mountain spirit on Wed May 14, 2008 8:32 pm

Hi Gurn,

I reload for 270 Win, 30-30 Win, 30-06 Springfield, 35 Whelen, 338 Win. Mag.  I have great faith in each of these rounds and what they can do when used properly.

Yep it's a good feeling to shoot a tight group, or take a nice critter with your own loads. What bullet do you use most in your 338 Win?

Favorute Bullet for 338

Postby mountain spirit on Thu May 15, 2008 12:55 pm

Hello Gurn,

Glad there are some real reloaders on site.

Yes Sir,  There's nothing like develping a good load that enables your rifle to print tighter groups. The favorite bullet for my Winchester Model 70 in 338 Mag is the Nosler 225 grain Partition bullet.  The 225 seems to have a nice mix... in terms of packing a good wallup but is flatter shooting than the 250's.  The driving application for me is moose and elk.  Realize that for some situations the 250 might be better in terms of penetration but I like the flatter trajectory of the 225 for potential longer shots and I have great faith of the 225 Nosler Construction.

You are right!  Reloading has helped me make some of my wallflower rifles into real shooters.  I've had really good luck using the Stoney point AOL gauge in coming up with improved accurracy loads.

I agree on your bullet weight choice  The 225 really shines out of the 338,
Especially the Nosler. My only other choice would be the 200gr Barnes X.

Hi Gurn,

That 200 grain copper sounds like a great bullet.  I hear Barnes now has a 210 grain "triple shock bullet" that's pretty good.  I wish I had more time and money to try everything.

I noticed that you reloaded for both the 338 RUM and 338 Win Mag.  I considered the 338 RUM but went with the Win Mag at the time since I like to shoot a lot ..... brass was less expensive and the recoil seemed easier to handle although the 338 RUM has greater effective range.  I was wondering how you liked the RUM vs the Winchester Magnum?  Thanks

Well I think the 338 Win has plenty power for anything in North America.
I bought the RUM because I had never shot one and wanted to check it out. Only kept it a month or two, then sent to Remington and had it chambered for 375 RUM. It shot great, but kicked like two mules.
Later I traded it to my son who keeps it just for bragging rights.
Theres no way I would trade off a good 338 win for a RUM, theres no pratical reason in my book to replace one with the other. The 210 Barnes TSX would be tough as nails and have great peneration.

I've only been reloading a short time but Here is what I load for.

.45-70
.405 Win.
.348 Win.

I'm into lever guns, and that is all I hunt with anymore. I hunt like my grandad did. I'm always willing to learn.
